Professional Experience
Experience from current employment – EPSSPA
I am currently employed as an IT Technician within Ellesmere Port Specialist School of Performing Arts. This is a large and busy highschool environment which essentialys requires a large and experienced support team. However due to certain circumstances the IT Support team was reduced therefore increasing my responsibilities. Although this has been slightly daunting at times due to the workload it has also been a welcomed challenge which I have gained so much from in many ways.
Server 2003: I have been lucky in my current employment as I have been able to have full access to the network and free control of the servers which has helped me to gain a lot of experience in a short space of time. I’m aware of the layout of a network and the essential components used within such as Active Directory, DHCP and DNS.
General Server Applications: I have a good working knowledge of using important server applications such as Symantec Backup Exec, Symantec Antivirus and Norton Ghost. I have been responsible for creating and distributing model specific system images across a large school network. Rolling out Anti Virus clients and keeping these current. Also due to being responsible for the backup of the network I have been able to get a good grasp of backup scheduling and configuring new jobs.
Windows Configurations & Installations: I have been responsible for creating images for a large range of computers and laptops. These images have had to have specific configurations dependant on what the machine is used for and by whom which takes a great deal of planning in order to be sure the image is suitable prior to being rolled out.
Network Maintenance and Development: I have been part of a 2 man team in successfully maintaining a stable network supporting over 700 users. During this time I have been involved in many tasks from installing wireless network points, network printers and web filters such as Smoothwall. I’ve played a large part in creating and rolling out images or over 600 computers and laptop as well as creating all relevant documentation along the way such as asset registers. I have also been solely responsible for the complete installation and configuration of an entire IT suit. I am fully capable of creating and installing cable runs to create access points.
Microsoft Office: I have gained a certificate for completing the Microsoft Office Specialist course for Microsoft Word, and also took part in a course which covered both intermediate and advanced areas of the Excel application. I also have good working knowledge of PowerPoint and can confidently use FrontPage.
Design: Through years of self learning as well as a computer games design course I am able to use a range of applications from 3D Studio Max, Maya 3D, Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro and have also worked on level design using developer’s packages.
Web Design: I’m able to comfortably use Macromedia programs such as Flash and Dreamweaver. I have created many personal websites and at one point made a couple of templates which I was able to sell on. This has also given me the opportunity to install and configure forum applications such as vBulletin. I have a fairly good understanding of both HTM and PHP languages.
Coding/Languages: I have taken part in a Teradata SQL course in order to learn how to search for information from a database using Business Objects and Queryman. Although I am not advanced in this area I can write simple queries and when looking at more complex queries I can break them down and understand what they are trying to achieve.
PAT: I have completed the PAT exam as well covering this in the Technicians course. I have carried out the testing and issued status stickers accordingly on a huge site and compiled layout documentation in order to make the process even simpler in future.
